Tried and Tested Supplements

This section provides information on supplements that the National Horse and Pony Network have tried, tested and rate. You will only find positive feedback on products listed in this section. So no time wasted reading about products that don’t work, or are not up to the job. For products to make it onto this part of the website they will be top products.

Gas-Ease from Stable Label.

Gas-Ease is pure activated charcoal.  This particular activated charcoal is manufactured for the pharmaceutical industry. We tested this product on a horse with Cushings, who is very prone to gassy colic and laminitis. We consulted with the vet regarding using Gas-Ease along side this horse’s medication. The advice was to feed medication am and let at least 4 hours pass before using Gas-Ease. The test horse can be fussy about supplements and Gas-Ease was eaten with no fuss. While using Gas-Ease we had no bouts of colic or laminitis. During the trial period we had to move paddocks to fresh pasture. Usually when moving even when carefully and slowly increasing time on new grass this horse would have suffered a bout of gassy colic. By giving Gas-Ease we had a trouble free paddock move. Gas-Ease is a must have for any horse owner who has a horse prone to gassy colic.

Feedmark

C-Plus - Feedmark. Managing a horse or pony with Cushings can be tricky. Thankfully Feedmark have brought out a first rate supplement to support equines with Cushings. C-Plus is a chastetree based supplement with cinnamon, seaweed and herbs. We tested C-Plus on a 21 year old gelding with Cushings, we noticed the coat condition improved,  the coat became shiney and the coat felt less course. C-Plus also helped with coat shedding, and in reducing the excess body fat typical in horses with Cushings. We also noticed improved immunity, this horse is very prone to skin infections from minor nicks and while on C-Plus these did not cause a problem. We used C-Plus along side advice from our vet and conventional medication.

Ulcer Calm - Feedmark. Thank you to Feedmark for their excellent FREE advice and support. My horse was suffering bouts of gastric pain, however not colic. After discussion with my vet and Feedmark’s nutritional advisor it was suggested to try him on a supplement for gastric ulcers. Wow what a difference Ulcer Calm has made, my horse was having gastric painful episodes several times a week and since being on Ulcer Calm not one episode. It has soothed his tummy and in turn given him back a quality of life.

Bio Pro – Feedmark. The horse we use this product on is very prone to gassy colic and our vet recommended feeding a pre and probiotic supplement. Bio Pro from Feedmark contains both FOS and yeast (YeaSacc1026). Many horses would benefit from Bio Pro as gut balance can be effected by many factors, a change of pasture, stress, travel, competition, old age, etc…This is a must have supplement it helps to maintain a healthy gut balance.

Chasteberry – Feedmark. Our test horse who is given Chasteberry suffers from Cushings and feeding this supplement has considerably helped with the associated symptoms of his disease. Chasteberry is also used to help hormonal problems in mares.

Feedmark's ExtraFlex HA. The horse this was tested on suffers from arthritis. Feeding ExtraFlex HA made a big difference to this horse as his mobility greatly improved. The supplement is also very palatable making feeding easy even to a fussy eater. If you are looking for a high quality joint supplement that really works at a competitive price then check out Feedmark's ExtraFlex HA.

Feedmark's Zerobute. If you are looking for a natural way to soothe aching joints and muscles then Feedmark's Zerobute is a safe and effective option. Our trial of Zerobute found this product to be highly effective as the 21 year old horse used to test this product found a new lease of life. He felt more mobile and flexible when ridden. Plus he enjoyed performing acrobatic high jinks in the field which before Zerobute had been a thing of the past. Zerobute smells great and the horse found it to be very palatable.

Feedmark's Clarity. If your horse is stabled or suffers from pollen or dust allergies then your horse will love Feedmark's Clarity. The horse used to test this product is prone to suffering from nasal discharge when stabled. Feeding Clarity helped to loosen and clear the excess of the mucus and after a few weeks on Clarity the discharge cleared up completely. Clarity is made from seven herbs that support respiratory health. Our horse found it highly palatable and it smells great too.

Feedmark's Prolamin. Owning a laminitic horse or pony can be a worry. Often due to management of laminitis horses are on a restricted ration and it can be a concern they are not receiving the appropriate levels of vitamins and minerals. Prolamin is a great supplement as it comes in two packs that are designed to support the all needs of a laminitic. One pack contains a mixture of herbs that help support capillary strength, improve circulation and support hoof regeneration. The other is a high specification pellet which ensures the horse receives all vitamins and minerals required. The horse used to test Prolamin benefited greatly from this product, his coat condition greatly improved which is a good indication that it will have also benefited the condition of the hooves. (However for a difference to be seen in the hooves it would require a much longer test than we conducted) We can also report that during the trial period the horse did not suffer a bout of laminitis.

Pure Flax. The horse we tested Pure Flax on has a compromised immune system and as a result has a very poor coat, dry skin and had suffered a bout of skin infections requiring harsh veterinary treatments leaving him with a scurfy and terrible looking coat. Along with this he also suffered mild bouts of colic. Feeding Pure Flax greatly improved this horse’s skin and coat, the coat how has a glossy shine and the skin is no longer dry, scurfy and is very healthy. Our horse also suffered no bouts of colic during the trial period. Pure Flax is a great source of Omega 3 and 6 for horses which many horse diets often lack.

Natural Horse Supplies - Vitex Agnus Castus also known as Chaste Berry and Monk’s Pepper. My horse has Cushings and Chaste Berry is well known to support horses suffering from this condition. It has certainly made a difference to my horse as his coat is shedding well this spring. Plus my horse feels much better in himself, he has more energy, and his depressed state has lifted. Chaste Berry is reported to support normal hormonal activity and provide nutritional support for the pituitary gland and endocrine system. Natural Horse Supplies offer this supplement at a competitive price, plus delivery is fast too.

Brinicombe Equine

Think Sound Joint Supplement I can highly recommend Brinicombe Equine’s Think Sound Joint Supplement as within a week of my horse starting this joint supplement I could see and feel a big difference. My horse is arthritic in his hocks. Before using Think Sound he was on another leading brand of joint supplement (more expensive too). Within a week of starting Think Sound it felt like someone had taken years off him. He was more comfortable, free moving and full of life. I found Think Sound to be far more effective than the other leading brand I had been using, and it is competitively priced too.

Think Fly from Brinicombe Equine. I had never tried a supplement to help reduce fly nuisance until I started my horse on Think Fly. You need to allow a few weeks for the supplement to build up into the system. After only 3 weeks I can report that my horse is less bothered by flies. For example one evening my horse and I walked in from the field along by the river I had a cloud of flies bothering me and the flies wanted to keep their distance from him. As it is in his system he gets 24 hour protection too!

Blue Chip

Blue Chip Original. I have been feeding Blue Chip Original to my horse Moss for two years and the difference it has made to his health is fantastic.

Blue Chip Joint RLF. My horse has arthritic hocks and using Blue Chip RLF has made a big difference to my horse, he is more comfortable and free moving. Blue Chip Joint RLF is usual as it is in a liquid form and it is easy to measure out with the cap provided. It tastes good too (I also tried it).

Horslyx I use the small tubs of Horslyx to offer to my horse as a treat. I use the licks not only as a treat but as a very useful distraction for when I need him to stand still e.g. when I am trimming his feathers. I use it as a treat as my horse is a laminitic and care must be taken with feeding Horslyx to laminitic horses. (There are feeding guidelines on their website). My friend’s horse is not laminitic and he has free access to his Horslyx, it is a great way of providing vitamins and minerals and it reduces boredom while he is stabled.

Restore and ImmuPlus from Indian Herbs Equine Many years ago my horse was diagnosed to have sarcoids by my vet. The vet recommended treatment using cream from Liverpool University, but we decided to delay the treatment for a few months until the winter months (less flies). While we waited I tried Restore and Immuplus from Global herds. To cut a long story short the sarcoids got smaller then disappeared and they have not returned! Much to my amazement and to my vet!

GWF Nutrition

Joint Aid Plus. I have used Joint Aid Plus for my arthritic horse. I found it to be a good joint supplement. Using this supplement helped my horse to feel more comfortable in his arthritic hocks.  My horse loved the small pellet formula as he was very happy to eat it up in his small feed.  He is a good doer so finding a supplement that is palatable is a big bonus.

GWF Nutrition X-Lam Aid We tested this product on a horse with Cushings disease that is prone to laminitis. During the time we tested the product the horse did not suffer a bout of laminitis. Other benefits we noted included: Improved digestion as the droppings firmer. A healthier looking coat. Hoof growth even with no rings often associated with laminitic horses. A boosted immune system as this horse often suffers with a stable cough and runny nose and while on X-Lam Aid this was not an issue. The pellet formula made it easy and palatable to feed. There was also an anti-inflammatory action as this horse also suffers from arthritis and it was noted the horse had more mobility while on X-Lam Aid. If your horse is prone to laminitis then this high quality supplement is worth every penny as it offers comprehensive nutritional support which has been developed with and approved by specialist equine veterinary practices.
