Routine vaccination prevents horses falling ill. All horses should be vaccinated against tetanus. It is a very distressing disease and usually fatal unless the horse is treated aggressively with antitoxin at an early stage. Vaccination against influenza is particulary important for horses coming into contact with each other, e.g. at competative events, livery yards, riding schools etc... Horses can also be protected against equine herpes virus 1 and 4. Your local vet will be able to offer you advice in vaccination of your horse to suit your circumstances.
