Horsemanship and Reiki Fusion sessions are a unique and ground breaking approach that is now being offered by Vicki Jayne Maris and Sarah Bradshaw. Both are massive fans of alternative health therapies. Over the years they and their horses have enjoyed physical and mental benefits from treatments. Vicki noticed that after her treatments there was an additional benefit; her riding and groundwork improved and the communication between herself and her horse became much clearer. Vicki wanted to explore the possibility of blending alternative therapies with her professional horsemanship approach. As both are passionate about Vicki’s style of horsemanship, it was a very natural progression for the two to work together. They set about exploring combining healing techniques that work with energy, with a horsemanship style that does the same. What they discovered by fusion of the two skill sets was a unique, holistic and ground breaking blend is achieved with many very interesting benefits to horse and rider.

Horsemanship & Reiki Fusion:-

  • Firstly the rider must learn to understand and apply intent and energy in their horsemanship. So when the horsemanship lesson is fused with Reiki this experience is enriched and taken to another level. Just an application of Reiki to a ridden session with no understanding of how to read and apply intent and energy in horsemanship you will not feel or achieve the maximum benefits.
  • The fusion enables greater recognition of energy in relation to horsemanship. People can learn to understand, feel and apply energy with their horses. By blending Vicki’s horsemanship with Reiki the energy blocks of both horse and rider start clearing allowing both bodies and minds to function more effectively. With the knowledge of energy in relation to horsemanship the horse and rider partnership will feel the difference.
  • As most seek harmony with their horse. Horsemanship that focuses on this agenda fused with Reiki takes this to another level. Communication becomes even clearer and more effective between horse and rider. Even closer bonding in their partnership has been reported. Therefore in turn a more effective lesson or schooling session is experienced.
  • Many clients start their journey with problems in one shape or form. Enjoyment and relaxation with their horse is often just a dream. Horsemanship that uses intent and energy requires relaxation, so by using a range of techniques Vicki works towards the goal of relaxation. The fusion of Reiki into the horsemanship enables relaxation of horse and rider to a much deeper level.
  • Horsemanship is about working in partnership with your horse to develop a connection that is soft. This softness should been seen on the outside and be felt on the inside. Vicki’s horsemanship approach helps people learn how to develop this connected softness with their horse. Blending with Reiki people report their horses become even softer mentally and physically.
  • Vicki’s horsemanship approach is first and foremost about building a strong bond between horse and rider. Many clients start out at the wrong end of this spectrum, not understanding their horse, confusion, fear, stress, anxiety, and calling Vicki in as a last resort. Clients are successfully supported in gaining the skills, knowledge and understanding to develop a bond with their horse so they can work in a partnership. Her work is beautifully complimented by Reiki as people report it enriches the bonding and building of the horsemanship partnership.
  • Both horse and rider find the experience of the blend of horsemanship and Reiki enjoyable.
  • An added benefit is that these changes to horse and rider continue outside of the lesson.

Vicki explains: “Many people seek harmony with their horse. This can be achieved by tuning in to intent, energy and the language of the herd to become in tune with your horse. However, many riders only see the resulting energy blocks in their horsemanship such as an unbalanced relationship with their horse, lack of communication, poor understanding, mistrust and lack of unison with horse and rider etc… a problem they want fixing.

I use a range of complimentary teaching styles, facilitated learning and cognitive behavioural techniques to teach people. This enables people to effectively learn how to read, understand and use intent, energy (using core breathing techniques) and the language of the herd in their horsemanship. This horsemanship approach enables horse and rider partnerships to become harmonious and balanced. Reiki works on clearing blocked energies, thus enabling the body (horse and /or rider’s) to function at its optimum. This is why I asked the question: Is it possible to fuse my horsemanship methods which use intent and energy, with Reiki? The answer is yes. Individually my horsemanship and Sarah’s Reiki, Acupressure and Acupuncture are very beneficial. However it is fascinating to see the many extra benefits by fusion of our skills.”

Sarah explains: “Reiki is an alternative therapy based on the belief that every living being, human, animal or plant has a life force or life energy flowing inside, around and radiating from it. This energy is known as Ki or Chi (pronounced key and Chee). In order for the human, animal or plant to function well, this energy needs to be balanced and flowing freely around the body.  A Reiki practitioner is able to channel energy or Ki to living beings in order to clear energy blocks and increase their ki, thus enabling the body to heal itself. When the body does not seem to work properly, illness is evident, or there is simply a lack of well being, it is believed this is due to the ‘energy’ being depleted or not flowing around the body as it should. Many factors can affect the smooth flowing of this energy in horse and/or rider.  Our Western life styles can have a negative effect on energy or Ki. Stress, environmental factors such as damp housing, excess cold, excess heat, poor diet, life style choices, alcohol, recreational drugs etc…”

Vicki says “Horses are unable to understand the concept of a placebo effect. Horses thrive on natural horsemanship and alternative therapies. Separately my approach of using intent, energy and the language of the herd and Sarah’s Reiki, Acupressure and Acupuncture are highly beneficial. My clients and their horses experience significant positive results using my horsemanship approach. My animals and I have greatly benefited with treatments from Sarah. By fusing Reiki and my horsemanship approach we are able to offer horse owners a unique and holistic experience that goes beyond the benefits experienced by each by itself.”

In the first trials Sarah gave a Reiki treatment while Vicki rode her own horse Merlot. The effects of clearer communication and deep relaxation were felt by both Vicki and Merlot. Seeing positive results, the next step was to look for volunteers for Vicki and Sarah to develop this partnership approach. Several of Vicki’s clients quickly became involved in this ground breaking approach. Annabelle Tuckey and Emma Barnes, two of Vicki’s clients share their experiences:

Emma says “I have been practicing Vicki’s horsemanship approach for approximately 18 months, and what a journey my horse Louis and I have taken. Before he was unbalanced, forehand heavy and pulled like a train. Louis is now balanced, soft and responsive to my subtle requests. When I was asked if I wanted to try blending Reiki into my riding I was curious, I had very little idea what Reiki was or what it entailed. I went with an open mind. I warmed Louis up as normal and with Vicki tutoring we did a few simple exercises. When Sarah started giving Reiki to Louis I could feel his body relax, his breathing became very deep and slow and his head and neck lowered. He went into a state of deep relaxation. Sarah then moved on to me, I also became very relaxed. The effect when we started to work on our horsemanship was Louis and I were very chilled, very soft and relaxed in mind and body, and we had a very good connection. The Reiki compliments Vicki’s horsemanship approach. I feel we were both more relaxed after the Reiki. Louis was also pretty chilled out for the next day or so. We both enjoyed the experience.”

Annabelle says “I found the combination of horsemanship and Reiki session really fascinating. I had already learnt from Vicki how important it is to read and use appropriate intent and energy when working with your horse. With the addition of Reiki it was incredible to physically feel the energy rippling through Alfie's back and watch how he drew in and out of contact with Sarah’s Reiki. I enjoyed the atmosphere that was created. It helped with our bonding and it is something I would like to try again at a later date. So many horses and their owners could benefit from it.  For me, it really highlighted how much of a partnership it is.”
