In an ideal world all horses and ponies would have a safe secure home with owners who are able to offer the care they need to be healthy. Sadly we do not live in an ideal world and many animals suffer neglect and abuse. Without the outstanding work done by the many animal welfare organisations these animals would continue to suffer in silence. These organisations can only keep going with your support. Here is how you can make a difference.
-
Donate money to your favourite welfare organisation
-
Volunteer your time and skills, get in touch with your favourite welfare organisation and offer your services
-
Re-cycle your unwanted equine tack / equipment / rugs etc. Many organisations love these gifts.
-

Nominated Welfare Organisations / Local Animal Welfare Heros
Redwings
Reasons for nomination:
For all the amazing work they have done over the years, they are fantastic to the equines as well as visitors.
Redwings Horse Sanctuary is the largest horse sanctuary in the UK and works to provide and promote the welfare, care and protection of horses, ponies, donkeys and mules. The charity provides permanent specialised Sanctuary care to more than 1100 rescued equines that no longer have a working life but retain a quality of life. Those rescue cases that have the potential for a working life are re-homed through the charity’s Guardianship scheme and over 500 currently live in homes around the UK. Click here to visit Redwings website.
Heavens Gate
Reasons for nomination:
Great. I adopted a lurcher from them years ago, and have seen all the hard work and care they give .
The emphasis at Heaven's Gate Farm is short-term care and successful re-homing. The Trust's policy is to match the right pet with the right owner. Heaven's Gate Farm attracts people of all ages and many families come to the farm to see the animals and while away a few hours, some like to enjoy the family picnic area. A gift shop is located in the reception area and also offers pet supplies. Click here for more information.
EMW (Equine Market Watch)
Reasons for nomination:
The brilliant work that EMW & the helpers do to check on conditions at horse sales & fairs & also keeping their eyes open for stolen horses. They watch out for stolen sick and help stop cruelty at sales.
They do fantastic work and never stop.
EMW has two dedicated equine sanctuary bases in the UK. EMW Sanctuaries UK liaise with HORSEWATCH UK, The Stolen Horse Register, as well as LAHO and other welfare agencies in their work at auctions, markets and horse fairs across the UK. EMW sanctuaries UK is dedicated to monitoring the welfare of equines in markets and auctions. EMW Sanctuaries UK actively campaigns against indiscriminate breeding of valueless foals whose average life span is a scant miserable 6 months and are active in the EU with regard to live transportation issues. EMW Sanctuaries UK will investigate any incidents of cruelty, neglect and abuse inflicted on any equine. Click here for more information.
The Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary
Reasons for nomination:
They rescue and care for donkeys and when necessary horses. Each and every one of them blossoms and returns to good heath full of joy. The staff are dedicated and knowledgable and are always there to give advice with a smile.
Kind and friendly people who have grown their sanctuary enormously in the past few years. A lovely place to visit any time of the year, and to see the changes in the rescue donkeys is amazing.
The Sanctuary was first established in 1987 to provide any donkey in distress or otherwise in need of care and attention, a safe and permanent home. The charity relies entirely on the kind donations of visitors and many fundraising activities held throughout the year. Donkeys need a lot of care and attention. They need regular brushing, called grooming and their hooves trimmed by a farrier every six to eight weeks, however; in general donkeys are very placid, gentle creatures and respond best when they are treated kindly. They are very loyal and this is what makes them very good friends. So when you next visit the donkeys at the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary, why don't you kindly pat one on the neck and make a new friend for life! Click here for more information.
Windsor Horse Rangers
Reasons for nomination:
A fabulous children's charity that has 17 horses and a donkey and serves 160 young members aged 8-18yrs who come every weekend of the year to learn horse mastership, horse care and welfare. Children are from all kinds of backgrounds and with the problems of modern family life. Rangers is a haven for many. Our teenagers are lovely! And are peer educators for the little ones, it beats hanging around the town centres and getting into mischief. Run entirely on charitable donations and with unpaid volunteers this is a very special horsey community that needs financial support to continue it's fantastic work.
The Horse Rangers Association was founded in 1954 by Raymond Gordon. The HRA used to have its headquarters and training centre in the Royal Mews, Hampton Court Palace. Our Founder, Raymond Gordon F.R.S.A created the Horse Rangers for boys and girls aged eight years upwards, with the younger members being called 'ponies'. The Horse Rangers Association is a self-supporting non-profit making organisation, whose aim is to enable its members to become associated with, and interested in, horsemanship. Riding instruction, stable training and other activities connected with horses and general recreation are provided. Click here for more information.
Shy Lowen Horse & Pony Sanctuary
Reasons for nomination:
I have recently started volunteering at this Liverpool-based sanctuary and cannot find the words to express the value of the work which is carried out there. As well as rehabiliting rescued horses and ponies, the sanctuary educates a team of local and often underprivileged young people in horse care and natural horsemanship. The feeling of peace, serenity and overwhelming goodness is encountered as soon as you walk through the gates of this wonderful place, and the entire team of Trustees, volunteers and animals there deserve recognition for their amazing work.
This registered charity relies entirely on donations/sponsorships from the public. Formed in 1999 and becoming a registered charity in 2008, the sanctuary has gone from strength to strength, but is in real need of support from anyone who is able to help the team to continue their much-needed rescue work.

The TRC Ltd
Reasons for nomination:
Every year thousands of horses leave racing, some because they reach the end of their natural career, others through injury, old age or lack of ability. The TRC takes in these horses, with the aim of re-homing them to loan homes for the rest of their lives. All new arrivals are given time to relax and adjust to their new environment. They are physically assessed by the vet, trainer and back specialist before ridden work begins. Each horse is given a training plan to make sure it is ready to be re-homed as soon as possible. The TRC spends as long as it takes on each horses, weeks for some, months for others. They have a detailed application process for anyone that wants to take a TRC horse to ensure we find the right loaner. Ideally the loaner takes the horse for the rest of its life but if it doesn't work out the horse returns to the TRC and in most cases we try to find the loaner another horse. In all cases the horse remains the property of the TRC and is visited regularly by their field officers. The TRC is dedicated to the well-being of all ex-racehorses and is there to help with any problems you might be having with your thoroughbred regardless of whether it is a TRC horse or not. Their trained staff can give advice by telephone and also offer schooling and retraining clinics to address specific issues. There is always an urgent list of horses needing the help of the Centre and the TRC needs to raise close to £1500 per DAY to continue their work. Click here to visit TRC’s website.
The Mare and Foal Sanctuary
Reasons for nomination:
They are reascuing ponys from the moors that would have been slaughtered, they even take other horses too not just moorland horses. I think they deserve to be recognised as they loan ponies out to homes but are always full they never seem to have empty stables.
The Mare And Foal Sanctuary was founded in 1988 by Rosemary Kind, who has rescued and looked after horses and ponies all her life. In 1992 the Sanctuary became a Registered Charity, and has since rescued and found loving homes for a large number of ponies. The Sanctuary employs around twenty full-time members of staff, and is helped by many part-time volunteers. Their aims are not just to rescue neglected, unwanted or abused horses but when possible to rehabilitate, retrain and eventually re-home them into loving, knowledgeable environments.
In July 2005 they finally managed to buy their own farm which ends 17 years of renting properties for the Sanctuary. They own over a hundred and fifty horses and ponies of which most are cared for at loan-homes away from the sanctuary (although we do regular home checks to ensure their well-being).
We also have 11 charity shops in the South and East Devon areas which bring in a steady income. In addition to our regular full and part-time staff we benefit from a very helpful core of volunteers both in the stables and in the shops without whom we could not survive.
World Horse Welfare
Reasons for nomination:
Formerly ILPH for all the work they do in re-homing horses.
World Horse Welfare is a charity dedicated to giving abused and neglected horses a second chance in life. They have four recovery and rehabilitation centres, located throughout Great Britain are open to the public all year too, so you can come and meet some of the horses. The charity employs 150 staff. In Britain, they are responsible for roughly 1,700 horses, nearly all of which have suffered abuse or neglect. Nearly 85% of these animals are in caring loan homes. Overseas, they train more than 100 saddlers and farriers every year. They use their skills to improve the lives of local working horses and the lives of their owners. They also campaign to change legislation and attitudes about horse welfare. Click here for more information.

Win a Bitless Bridle from Easytrek

Easytrek and the National Horse and Pony Network have partnered to offer a lucky winner the chance to win an Easytrek leather bitless bridle and gripper reins. The bridles up for grabs are available in pony, cob and full size in either black or havanna brown leather. The Easytrek Bitless Bridle is based on a similar design to the Dr. Cooks. They work on exactly the same head hugging principle as other major leading brands – known as a Cross Under or Cross Over Bridle and achieve exactly the same results. These Bitless Bridles work by spreading pressure over a large area (head hugging principle) which is pain free as opposed to a bit which applies pressure to the mouth which is a very sensitive area. Research over the past 10 years has proven beyond doubt that bits cause pain to the horse, and all equine owners should seriously consider using the bitless bridle, which provides the rider with a kind effective means of control.
These Bridles are perfect alternative if you have:
- Horses with a Sensitive Mouth
- Horses who Head Toss & Jogging
- Horses who Lean on the Bit
- Inexperienced Riders who may pull un-necessarily on a horse’s mouth
- Breaking & Young Horses
- Bit Evasion & Hard Mouth
- Horses with Dentistry Problems & Bolshy Ponies.
As a general guide to fitting – If your horse/pony currently uses a Cob Size bitted bridle then buy a Cob Size Bitless Bridle etc. Easytrek Bridles have been tried & tested by various Equestrian Organisations including the National Horse & Pony Network, Gallop Magazine, www.cobswallop.com & Natural Horsemanship enthusiasts with fantastic results.
The only difference is the price!
They are made of high quality durable leather with a padded brow & noseband & come with a pair of rubber gripper reins. Therefore if you have always wanted to try going bitless but have not done so because you are unsure about spending large amounts of money on a bridle or you are unsure that it will work for you, then grab this fantastic opportunity to win one and enter our competition.
Easytrek Bitless Bridles are available to purchase direct from EASYTREK UK – price is £32.00 Inc postage.
Easytrek also stock Treeless Saddles. For more information please contact: Easytrek on 01432 344775 or click here to visit Easytrek's website.
